Used Book Sales Spiking

People are looking more and more to used books, to either read (why pay full price at Barnes and Noble?) or sell (who needs this macro-economics textbook anymore?) during this down economy.

Sadly, Seattle's own Horizon Books (pictured above), the oldest used bookstore in the city, has been unable to weather the economic storm and will be closing soon.

From an email I received from them recently...

Horizon Books - Seattle's Oldest Used Bookstore - CLOSING!

Horizon Books, located at 425 15th Ave. E., will be closing its doors after 38 years in the same Capitol Hill location. The store will shut its doors for the last time at 6 pm, Sunday March 15th, The Ides of March.

A progressive clearance sale (currently in progress) will run 'til the end.

This marks the closing of Seattle's oldest used bookstore - operating in the same location, under the same ownership, since July 1971. Store owner Don Glover got his start in the book trade at the age of 15, at Seattle's Shorey Books in 1960. The Capitol Hill store was his first store, and the intervening years have seen Horizon Bookstores in Roosevelt and Greenwood, among other ventures and locations.

A progressive clearance sale with reductions taking place each week will help close out the location. Many book cases will be for sale. (Bring your tape measure!)

After the closure of the 15th Ave. store, Horizon Books will operate on the internet, in addition to maintaining a browsing space at 1423 10th. Ave. (between Pike and Union just south of the Comet Tavern & Neumos), a space shared with Recollection Books. It's a basement space located directly below Atlas Clothing.

It's been a slow, difficult decision, but a necessary one given the economics of the situation. We've enjoyed being a part of the neighborhood and Seattle's cultural fabric. Thanks.

Don Glover, Owner, and Staff (and Malanga the Cat).
