Robert Frost's Poetry and a Women's Soccer Team's Winning Streak
From a story in Lake News Online...
At first glance, the Robert Frost poem "Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening" suggests a man stopping to appreciate the beauty of some woods. Lady Lakers coach J.D. Hunter, also an English teacher, showed his team the fourth and final stanza.
"About two weeks ago we started getting on a little (winning) streak, and we didn't want to become complacent," Hunter said.
While they celebrate their wins and milestones in the midst of an historic season, the Lady Lakers have taken on the poem's repeating final lines as something of a credo.
The final stanza of the poem reminds the athletes, playing for a district championship for the first time since 2004, to keep their focus on each playoff game.
