The Word Made Flesh

Forget butterflies or skull and bones, says the Daily Beast, the new tattoo fad is Plath, Faulkner, and other quotes from famous authors.

From the article...

“We envisioned a book about a new generation of tattoo enthusiasts,” Talmadge says, her own arms a colorful testament to a love of ink on skin. “We wanted to challenge the stereotype that tattoos were the province of dropouts, gang members, and bikers. Because that’s just not true anymore, if it ever was.”

Taylor put out a call for submissions on the popular literary website HTMLGIANT.com, and within hours his inbox was filling up with tattoos from around the world. He realized they’d hit a nerve. The original post was soon picked up and spread across the Internet. Forbes magazine arranged for an interview. And Taylor and Talmadge scrambled to put a book proposal together.

In the ensuing months, hundreds of tattoos were sent in or solicited: Plaths and Vonneguts; Pynchons and Palahniuks; Sendaks and Silversteins; several Harry Potters; a dozen Twilight series vampires. The Word Made Flesh: Literary Tattoos From Bookworms Worldwide is a well-designed and thoughtfully curated collection of the very best body art they received, accompanied by a few words from each inked-up contributor.
