Genre Bending Trending

Vanity Fair takes a look at recent books that are hard to categorize.

From the piece...

So, what does one call this book? A semi-autobiographical novelistic take on the real life of an iconic public figure (with a memorable point-of-view shift to the consciousness of the White House dog) with digressions into the challenges of writing fiction and assorted tips on narrative technique? Egads, it’s a marketing nightmare. That speaks to me; I’m hooked, but your average reader?

In an age when publishers take so many cues from booksellers, bowing to the might of Barnes & Noble’s known vetoing of covers and passing on books it doesn’t think will sell, even with an author as popular as Ann Beattie, Mrs. Nixon represents an enormous gamble. I can buy only so many copies.
