Book Marks

The Hill Museum & Manuscript Museum looks like an awesome place. Their newest exhibit:
"Book Marks: The Trails Readers Leave Behind."

From the site...

We’ve all been told not to write in books, but we all do it anyway. At the very least, we write our names in books as a sign of ownership. At our most involved, we have long conversations with the author in the margins. Textbooks are underlined, highlighted, cross-referenced and annotated. We even have books that are designed to be colored or otherwise decorated, although in the 21st century we tend to give these more playful objects to children.

The books in this exhibit all bear the marks left by previous generations of readers, who wrote in them, marked them, damaged the covers, or warped the bindings. Some people might think these books have been damaged by previous owners. Book Marks invites you to consider these books as archeological objects, providing us with a window to the lives and thoughts of past users and the sometimes surprising way they used books.
