Planning a Bookstore
There's a neat story coming out of Pittsburgh. A writer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette was so tired of writing about indie bookstores closing that he's pondering opening one himself.
From the article...
I've never drawn up a business plan before, so bear with me as I ponder opening an independent bookstore in Pittsburgh in 2011.
The idea started growing when I stopped in at the Nicholas Hoare bookshop in Toronto in October to buy a copy of "Freedom" for the Jonathan Franzen reading that night.
With its fireplace, library ladders on tall wooden shelves, shiny oak floors and pleasant spots to sit and browse, a traditional bookstore like Nicholas Hoare seemed the kind of place Pittsburgh would embrace.
There's got to be a market for such a venture. The competition in the city is pretty thin -- Borders in EastSide and Bradley's in Macy's for new books.
One consideration: I've written about the closings of so many bookstores in Pittsburgh that even thinking about opening a new one gives me pause.
