A Literary Guide for the New Parent

Struggling, dear parent, to find literary fulfillment in an illustrated morality play about bowel movements?

From a piece in the New York Daily News...

To help new parents get started in the brave new world of children’s literature, here are some complementary book pairings: a “grown-up” book and its picture book counterpart. These pairings offer a bridge between reading worlds by featuring recognizable characters, similar styles, and parallel themes. And most importantly, none of these pairs feature any (overt) messages about the joys of pooping.

"Freedom" (Jonathan Franzen) and "The Lorax" (Dr. Seuss): Franzen has been hailed as the voice of a generation, while the Lorax uses his voice to speak for truffula trees and brown barbaloots. And while their strong voices differ in style, at the core Freedom and the Lorax are the same book: an urgent message about environmental stewardship, delivered by a ubiquitous curmudgeon.
