15 Writers Made Great By Their Addictions

The list, care of The Curse of the Drinking Class.

From the piece...

Turning coffee into a fine addiction, Balzac (pictured above) drank up to 50 cups a day, until he began eating the dry coffee grounds… and not because he liked it. “For a week or two at most, you can obtain the right amount of stimulation with one, then two cups of coffee brewed from beans that have been crushed with gradually increasing force and infused with hot water. For another week, by decreasing the amount of water used, by pulverizing the coffee even more finely, and by infusing the grounds with cold water, you can continue to obtain the same cerebral power,” he said. He is known for his literary realism and was considered by Victor Hugo to be “the first among the greatest”. He died at age 49.
