I write, but am really bad about graphic design. I'm going to browse through a couple of these to see if I can pick up some tips that may be useful. My attitude so far is "do what I'm good at, and hire help for that which I'm not." But sometimes that doesn't work...
This isn't graphic design, but I wanted to recommend to writers a great thesaurus I've recently come across, "The Thinker's Thesaurus" by Peter Meltzer. It's so much more than an ordinary thesaurus with ordinary word choices -- it gives you more unusual, sophisticated and/or interesting synonyms, for the perfect choice. As the author says: "one of the reasons for the creation of this thesaurus was the premise that con- ventional thesauruses rarely assist the literate writer. The synonyms provided are so bland and sim- ple that they were likely considered and rejected before the writer even opened the thesauruses." He's got some great stuff here.
